What Teachers Should Know

Annual Payment

Year one payments are issued by August 31. In subsequent years, the district issues a single payment by July 31.

TRS Eligible Compensation

TIA compensation stipends are included in annual wages reported to TRS and are used in calculating retirement benefits, subject to TRS rules and regulations.

Campus-Based Funding

Funding generated by a designated teacher is based on the teacher's designation and campus assignment at the time of the Winter Class Roster. The state formula also considers campus socioeconomic need and rural status.

Why We Invest

Banquete ISD's spending plan supports the district's goals to attract, develop, retain, and sustain high-quality educators; provide supplemental compensation for top-tier teachers; and align district resources with student learning and teacher performance.

This is a planning estimate only. Actual payroll deductions and net payment will vary by employee.
What might the 16.5% estimate include?

The 16.5% used in this calculator is a conservative planning estimate for possible employee payroll deductions. Depending on the employee, deductions may include:

  • TRS retirement contribution for TRS-covered employees
  • TRS-Care contribution when applicable
  • Medicare tax based on the employee's applicable payroll status
  • Federal income tax withholding, which varies according to the employee's tax elections and individual circumstances
  • Other applicable payroll deductions that may apply to the individual employee
Why does Banquete ISD use 16.5%?
Banquete ISD uses 16.5% as a conservative planning estimate to help employees understand what a TIA payment might look like after typical payroll deductions. It is not a guaranteed deduction rate, tax calculation, or individual payroll calculation. Actual deductions and net payment will vary by employee.

Understanding Your TIA Payment

Have questions about how TIA funding becomes a teacher payment? These frequently asked questions explain some of the most important parts of Banquete ISD's TIA Spending Plan.

Is the amount shown on the TIA Funding Map the amount I will receive?

No. The amount shown on the TIA Funding Map represents the estimated total TIA allotment generated by a designated teacher based on the state funding formula.

Under Banquete ISD's approved Spending Plan, 90% of the allotment is distributed as teacher compensation and 10% is retained by the district for TIA implementation and support. Employee payroll deductions are then applied to the teacher's gross payment.

Why doesn't my payment equal the total TIA allotment generated?

The total allotment is not the same as an employee's take-home payment.

Banquete ISD retains 10% of the allotment in accordance with the district's approved TIA Spending Plan. The remaining 90% represents the teacher compensation portion before applicable employee payroll deductions.

Those payroll deductions may include TRS-related contributions, Medicare, federal income tax withholding, and other applicable employee deductions.

Why might my actual take-home payment be different from the calculator?

The Banquete ISD calculator is intended for planning purposes only.

It uses a conservative estimate of up to 16.5% for possible employee payroll deductions. Actual deductions vary from employee to employee based on individual payroll status, tax withholding elections, applicable TRS and Medicare contributions, and other deductions.

The calculator should therefore be used as an estimate, not as a guarantee of an employee's final net payment.

What happens to the 10% retained by Banquete ISD?

The district-retained portion supports the implementation and sustainability of Banquete ISD's Teacher Incentive Allotment system.

Under the district's Spending Plan, these funds may support items such as third-party assessments, onboarding and training for new teachers, and professional development or training designed to help teachers earn a TIA designation.

When are TIA payments made?

For the first year of a designation, Banquete ISD issues TIA payments by August 31.

In subsequent years, the district issues a single annual payment by July 31.

Does my TIA payment count toward TRS retirement?

TIA compensation stipends are included in annual wages reported to TRS and are used in calculating retirement benefits, subject to applicable TRS rules and regulations.

Why can two teachers with the same designation generate different funding amounts?

TIA funding is not based on designation level alone. The state funding formula also considers characteristics of the campus where the designated teacher serves.

Factors such as campus socioeconomic need and rural status can affect the allotment generated. As a result, teachers with the same designation may generate different funding amounts depending on their campus assignment.
